ORTHOPAEDICS FOR THE AGING ADULT
Acute to Long Term Care

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve clinical effectiveness in the evaluation and treatment of orthopaedic disorders commonly seen in an older adult population. The focus will be on current literature that address age related changes and orthopaedic pathology thereby advancing the clinical competence of those working with orthopaedic conditions that affect older adults. Special emphasis will be placed on total joint arthroplasty and fracture rehab. Specific treatment techniques will be presented in a lecture-demonstration format and supplemented with hands-on lab activities to familiarize the participant with the development of treatment pathways and proper implementation. The course provides a thorough clinical approach to therapeutic goals and strategies and is designed to facilitate critical thinking and assist the practicing clinician in designing outcome oriented rehabilitation programs.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course the participants will be able to:
• Utilize knowledge of anatomy and biomechanics during assessment of common orthopaedic disorders in the geriatric patient.
• Apply knowledge of musculoskeletal considerations of aging to the development of functional rehabilitation programs.
• Understand and discuss the goals, principles and surgical techniques used in fracture management and total joint arthroplasty.
• Utilize assessment and treatment strategies for balance disorders and falls in elderly patients.
• Develop clinically effective rehabilitation programs for common orthopaedic disorders of the hip, knee and upper extremity in the geriatric patient.

TUITION
$485.00 - Comprehensive course and reference manual, functional movement screening manual, continental breakfast and breaks are included in the tuition.

ELIGIBILITY
Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, Certified Athletic Trainers, Occupational Therapists, and Certified Occupational Therapist Assistants may attend applicable courses for continuing education credit.

CREDIT FOR COURSES
This course offers 20 contact hours, equivalent to 2.0 CEU’s.
When offered in states requiring CEU’s these courses will be approved by that state’s licensing agency.

CANCELLATION OF COURSES
The Institute reserves the right to cancel courses with insufficient attendance two weeks prior to the start of the course. The Institute is not responsible for nonrefundable airline tickets and other commitments. Tuition may be transferred to another course or a full refund can be made if a cancellation does occur.
